A silent love in silk and lace
As a child, I could draw for hours, dreaming of dresses with flowing skirts, corsets, ribbons, and intricate details. After graduating from SintLucas in Boxtel, I essentially had one dream: to go to the Utrecht School of the Arts to study costume and set design. Everything in me wanted to enter that world—fabrics, silhouettes, eras. But life took a different turn. Different choices, different paths. And although I've always pursued my creativity, there's still a small voice that asks: what if...
Perhaps that's why I adore costume dramas so much. Not just for the story, but for the atmosphere, the imagery, the clothing. Those beautifully detailed dresses, the color combinations, the textures that are almost tangible through the screen. It evokes something in me that goes beyond nostalgia; it's a kind of homecoming in beauty, in form, in expression.
Series like Bridgerton , Pride and Prejudice, or Jane Eyre captivate me. And the classic Sissi films continue to touch a soft spot in my heart, as do the new interpretations like Sisi and The Emperor . But my love goes beyond ball gowns and tea parties. I also love the raw edges and epic feel of bolder series and films like 1883 , 1923 , and Yellowstone . 1883, in particular, touched me deeply, so intense, pure, and human. Or think of The Last Kingdom , Vikings , Braveheart , and Legends of the Fall … each one a story that resonates with power and beauty.
Every costume drama tells its own version of history, sometimes romantic, sometimes raw, sometimes full of fantasy. And it's precisely that contrast that moves me. It's precisely that balance that often resonates in my work: a touch of fairytale, but never sugary sweet. Light with an edge.
Maybe I didn't pursue that costume design training, but the love remains. And somehow, it still permeates everything I create.
The YellowStone series are truly amazing! Especially the 1883 series (The Beginning)
I'll be writing another blog soon with an overview of the most beautiful and unique costume series, from well-known to hidden gems. Because honestly? I'm a true expert in this area 💛
